This newly-built, Portland condo building was full of amenities but severely lacked character and personality. For our clients, a couple who has spent time in Maine on and off for most of their lives, the bland, grey, modern interiors wouldn't do. We were tasked with a goal of updating the space, adding personality and nuance, and fixing some functional concerns without a major renovation.

We focused primarily on the main living spaces -- the living room, dining room, and kitchen. In the living room we added symmetrical floating shelves surrounding the fireplace, which was given a coat of tonal plaster and a new custom Nero Marquina marble surround. New modern, but inviting, furnishings and wool drapery completed the main living room with views of the Portland harbor. In the kitchen we refaced the cabinets, significantly warming the paint color, and replaced the range hood and countertops. The dining room glass wall was partially closed up and we added a dry bar with custom ceiling-mounted nickel shelving.

The primary bedroom and hallway powder room were also updated with a custom marble sink and grasscloth wallpaper, wool drapery, and new furnishings. The project was an excellent example of thoughtful, high-impact updates without a complete remodel.
